Recently, Professor Du Yunzhou from the School of Economics and Management of Southeast University published an academic paper in the 9th issue of Management World in 2022, an authoritative domestic journal of economics and management. The paper is entitled "Multiple Models of Business Environment Ecology, Total Factor Productivity, and Urban High-Quality Development - A Configuration Analysis Based on the View of Complex Systems". The paper was completed in cooperation with Liu Qiuchen, a 2021 doctoral student, Chen Kaiwei, a 2020 master’s student, Professor Xiao Renqiao from the School of Business Administration of Anhui University of Finance and Economics, and researcher Li Shanshan from the School of Finance and Economics of Central University of Finance and Economics.

Optimizing the urban business environment and promoting total factor productivity are important starting points for achieving high-quality economic development. How to optimize the business environment to promote total factor productivity is an important management question to be answered. In view of the fact that the business environment is a complex ecology, Professor Du Yunzhou's team, based on the complex system view, combined with QCA, NCA, and DEA methods, and analyzed the complex relationship between the urban business environment ecology and total factor productivity in our country from the perspective of configuration.

The team's research found that: (1) Single business environment is not a necessary condition for high total factor productivity, but optimizing the market environment and improving the level of human resources play a universal role in urban high total factor productivity.(2) Three types of business environment ecology can generate high total factor productivity in cities, including technical efficiency-driven markets, incremental innovation-driven markets, and innovation-driven markets promoted by the government, which presents multiple paths and complex mechanisms for high-quality urban development in our country. In a business environment with a relatively sound legal environment, the symbiotic relationship between the government and the market is manifested in the government's "nudge" to effectively stimulate the vitality of market entities, resulting in innovation-driven high-quality development.

In addition, the team found two types of business environments that can lead to non-high total factor productivity. One is that all factors in the business environment are underperforming, and the other is that in an environment where the market environment and market vitality are insufficient, even if the government increases public services and spending, driving the economy with "heavy hands", it cannot achieve high-quality urban development. The team's research findings have important theoretical and practical implications for Chinese cities to optimize the business environment and realize the multiple models of high-quality urban development under a unified large market.
